LIVING COMMENTARY

Our new born-again spirits are not like our old sinful natures that were bound by fear (Hebrews 2:15). But we have received the Spirit of adoption that leads us to call God our Father, a term of intimacy unknown to O.T. saints. This signifies the inner witness of the Holy Spirit bearing witness with our spirits that we are the sons of God (next verse). God cannot be seen or perceived by carnal means, but we have an inner witness that assures us of unseen reality.

This “spirit of bondage” is a reference to the old sin nature (see note 9 at Romans 5:21). The fact that Paul said, “Ye have not received the spirit of bondage again” (emphasis mine), is a further testimony that our old sin nature is not just ceremonially dead but that it is totally gone from our lives (see note 3 at Romans 6:2).

We are sons of God by adoption. Jesus was the Son of God by nature. As Jesus said to the Jews, we were of our father, the devil (John 8:44 and Ephesians 2:3), but Jesus purchased us and made us adopted sons of God.
